Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant means as both clinical and non-clinical staff, we should be actively combating the disadvantage serving staff, veterans and the wider Armed Forces community encounter within healthcare services. Each one of us needs to play a role in promoting their access to services and facilitating their treatment and care plans. We can do this by:

  • Reviewing current treatment pathways and evaluating the impact on the Armed Forces Community.
  • Gaining feedback from our patients within the Armed Forces Community on issues they have encountered.
  • Encouraging more staff to attend Armed Forces Champion training, to better raise our awareness of barriers to accessing services and how to overcome these.
  • Asking patients to identify themselves as either currently serving or as veterans from our Armed Forces.

For our future employees, we need to:

  • Encourage self-identification of Armed Forces Community members on NHS Jobs/Trac.
  • Embed our Guaranteed Interview Scheme for Armed Forces Community members with Recruiting Managers, and as part of our policies and training.
  • Utilise Step Into Health platform, to promote insight days/work placements for Armed Forces leavers.
  • Actively promote our Armed Forces Community network within the Trust and between employees.

For our current employees we will:

  • Support additional leave requirements for staff going through reservist or armed forces training.
  • Promote the Armed Forces Network, to better support their needs.
  • Advertise the Guaranteed Interview Scheme for them to utilise if looking for a new role.
